What is the scale of the works and improvements to the fitness facilities?
The gym at Lord Butler Leisure Centre will be undergoing a full refurbishment, which will include a complete upgrade of the gym facilities to the proposed schedule:
- 26 February - The gym will temporarily close whilst the flooring is replaced and the new gym equipment is installed.
- 7 March - The newly refurbished gym will fully re-open.
What facilities will remain open?
The swimming pool, squash courts , ground floor changing rooms, dance studio, sports hall and cafe will remain open during the works.
What will happen with the memberships during this time?
Fitness Memberships will run as usual and all Group Exercise Classes are scheduled to operate as normal. All Fitness members will also have the option to utilise the facilities at Great Dunmow Leisure Centre and Mountfitchet Leisure Centre, while the improvement work is carried out.

What improvements will be made to the gym?
- Brand new state-of-the-art Life Fitness gym equipment including upgraded treadmills and resistance machines.
- New layout and improved flooring with a dedicated functional area.
- Upgraded free weights and more peripherals.
- Brand new additions including Olympic squat racks, SkiErg, AirBike, Powermill Climbers, Glute Drive and Multi-Jungle.
Will there be adjustments to the current prices?
Membership prices are reviewed annually and if applicable, applied in January each year.
Can I get inducted on the new equipment?
Yes absolutely! If you would like a physical induction on the new equipment you can contact the centre to request this. Alternatively, new equipment will have QR codes which can be scanned to provide you with a step-by-step video tutorial.
